Croatia national team coach Slaven Bilic has put forward his interest for the vacant Celtic manager’s role vacated by Gordon Strachan on Monday.

The former West Ham and Everton defender has notified officials at Celtic through his agent Rudi Vata, who played for the Parkhead side from 1993 to 1996.

“Slaven would be very interested in managing Celtic,” Vata revealed.

“My business partner me him in Zagreb two weeks ago and we asked him if he would be interested in moving to Glasgow. He said yes.

“He said he would love to be considered because he regards Celtic and Rangers as being amongst the top teams in Europe.”

Bilic, who has never been a club manager, led Croatia to the quarter-finals of Euro 2008 after topping a qualification group which included England and Russia. 

The 40 year old began his coaching career with the Croatia Under-21 side in 2004 and was promoted to senior team duties two years later, and has highly regarded by Celtic fans in online discussions over who should success Strachan.

Vata added: “He is a very clever and very enthusiastic coach and he speaks perfect English.

“Now we must wait to hear if Celtic are interested.”
