Lee Hendrie is on his way to Aberdeen to discuss a possible move to Pittodrie. The former Aston Villa and Sheffield United midfielder, who was capped once by England, will hold talks with Mark McGhee over a switch to the SPL.

STV Sport understands Hendrie may feature as a trialist for the Dons in their midweek friendly at Dunfermline Athletic on Wednesday night. The left-footed player, who was a permanent fixture in Villa first team up until five years ago, will be shown around Pittodrie this afternoon before potentially training with the squad on Tuesday.

Hendrie, 33, is currently unattached after his contract with Derby County was allowed to expire at the end of the 2009/10 season. Best known for his 12-year spell with Villa, he has enjoyed a nomadic spell in the last three years since leaving Martin O’Neill’s side.

After a loan spell at Stoke City towards the end of his spell with the Villains, Hendrie moved to Sheffield United on a free in 2007. But he failed to hold down a regular starting place, moving on loan to Leicester City and Blackpool before switching to Derby County at the beginning of the last campaign.

Injury curtailed his short spell at Pride Park, making just 10 appearances before finishing the season on loan at Brighton. Hendrie claimed in June that Championship club Queens Park Rangers were keen on him as well as the Seagulls, while also holding a firm offer from Greece.

“There are a couple of options,” Hendrie told Sky Sports in June. “QPR could be coming back if something else doesn't work out for them and there is a club in Greece who want me straight away.

”We are also waiting to see what sort of package Brighton come up with. It is just about waiting to see if they are coming back but I have set myself the target of being fixed up somewhere at the end of June.”

Hendrie could be joined by former Hearts and Celtic midfielder Paul Hartley, with McGhee said to have confirmed his interest in bringing him north. The Scotland international is free to leave Bristol City and has attracted interest from Tynecastle over a possible return to the capital.
