Mikael Lustig could miss the start of the season after it emerged the Celtic defender could require an operation on his hip.

The right back is currently at Euro 2012 with the Swedish national side, who take on France in their final game at the tournament on Tuesday night.

Lustig could miss that match because of concerns over his fitness and has now said he may need to go under the knife, potentially putting him out for months.

“I have had problems with this hip for a while,” Lustig is quoted as saying in the Daily Record. “Now I’ll have to see if it needs an operation after the Euros.”

Lustig has played just five times for Celtic since his arrival in January from Rosenborg, having been plagued with other injury problems throughout the second half of the 2011/12 season.

After initially struggling to adjust fitness-wise having only recently concluded a summer season in Norway, the 25-year-old then picked up groin and hip injuries, hampering his involvement with Neil Lennon’s side.
