Celtic accept Burnley bid for Danny Fox

Fox out of the box: Danny Fox is headed for a surprise Celtic exit.

Celtic have accepted a bid, understood to be in excess of £1.5 million, from Burnley for their left-back Danny Fox. It is expected that the former Coventry defender, who only moved to the SPL in July from the Sky Blues, will head to Lancashire for signing talks with the English Premier League club later this week.

The news comes after it was revealed captain Stephen McManus may also be heading out the door. The defender is close to agreeing a loan deal with Middlesbrough and is currently holding talks with the Teeside club.

News of Fox's move away from Celtic Park will come as a surprise to Hoops fans, with the 23-year-old having been a virtual ever-present in the Celtic team since his arrival in the summer. He has made 23 appearances since his Champions League debut against Dinamo Moscow in July 2009, last playing in the 1-1 draw with Rangers before he was sidelined by injury.

Shortly after his move to Celtic, the English-born player declared his eligibility for Scotland and went on to make his debut in George Burley’s last game in charge against Wales in November 2009.

After a strong start to their first season in the English top flight for 33 years, Fox's prospective club Burnley have found life increasingly difficult and are just one point off the relegation places in 15th position.

Owen Coyle left the Clarets in January this year for the manager’s job at Bolton, with former Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws stepping into the hotseat at Turf Moor.

Laws currently has former Dundee United full back Christian Kalvenes and one-time Newcastle defender David Edgar as his choices in the left-back position. Former Hamilton player Brian Easton is also an option for Laws, but he has made just one appearance since his summer switch from the SPL.

Fox’s arrival at Celtic in July saw Lee Naylor frozen out of the first team picture at Parkhead and it was widely speculated that it would be the former Wolves man who would depart in the January transfer window. Naylor is out of contract at the end of the season and Ipswich Town boss Roy Keane is a known admirer.

Instead it seems that it will be Fox who will dramatically cut short his spell in Glasgow for a move to the English Premier League, leaving Celtic short of cover in the left back position.
