Cardiff City’s Ross McCormack, Fulham’s Diomansy Kamara and Valerenga’s Mohammed Abdellaoue have all been linked with a last-minute move to Celtic. The striking trio are all reportedly lined up as a replacement for Scott McDonald, should the forward move on before the end of the January transfer window, which closes on Monday night.
Middlesbrough are poised to reunite McDonald with his former boss Gordon Strachan and four of his ex-team mates and are said to be lining up a £3.5 million bid for the Australian. West Ham have also shown an interest, but have yet to return with an offer.
Should that move come to fruition, Celtic boss Tony Mowbray will pick from an ever-growing list of potential options to bolster his current strikeforce of Georgios Samaras, Marc-Antoine Fortune and recent signing Morten Rasmussen.
The most expensive option would be a move for one-time Rangers striker McCormack, with the Bluebirds’ £5 million valuation of the player likely to be a major stumbling block. McCormack, who has five Scotland caps, had a sparkling 2008/09 season in the English Championship, scoring 23 goals in 44 appearances.
Bids for the player from Premier League clubs Hull City and Portsmouth were rejected over the summer, before McCormack suffered a hamstring injury that ruled him out for several weeks. He has struggled for form since his return, scoring just three from 19 appearances.
Based on Celtic’s recent signing form, Abdellaoue seems a likely target for Mowbray as the striker looks to move away from Norway after six years in the Superliga. Recent defensive signing Thomas Rogne came from the same league, whilst Jos Hooiveld and Rasmussen have also been recruited from Scandinavian clubs in the transfer window.
Moa as he is known, 24, signed for Valerenga in 2008 and scored 15 goals in 47 appearances. He had been linked with a move to England with Sunderland and Hull reportedly interested, but his agent, Stig Lillejord, gave credence to reports that he may be on his way to the SPL.
“Moa is keen to move to a bigger club and Celtic fit that profile. The leagues in Norway and Scotland are very similar but there is also interest from Germany,” he said on Friday.
Finally on Mowbray’s January transfer list is a possible loan swoop for Fulham forward Kamara. The Paris-born Senegal international played under the Celtic boss for a season at West Brom before he switched to London and has rarely featured under Roy Hodgson this campaign, scoring three goals in 13 appearances.
