David James’ planned talks with Celtic have been postponed. The former Liverpool and Manchester City player is available on a free transfer after rejecting a new contract at Portsmouth and had been expected to meet with Neil Lennon to discuss a move to Parkhead.

Following contact from the player’s agent to say James would be open to a move to Glasgow, the England number one was invited to begin talks. Those discussions were expected to take place on Monday before Lennon and his squad fly out to Portugal for their Champions League qualifier against Braga.

STV Sport understands James married his long-term partner Tanya at the weekend but had been expected to travel to Glasgow on Monday morning. However, those talks have been put on hold indefinitely and are unlikely to take place until later this week.

James is being lined up as a replacement for Artur Boruc, who moved to Fiorentina earlier this month. Though Lennon has Lukasz Zaluska and Dominic Cervi and both will travel for the Braga match, the Celtic manager had confirmed he would be in the market to replace Boruc.

Lennon had spoken of how encouraged he was by James’ willingness to begin negotiations with the club.

“We are still a long way off and it's early days in terms of negotiation,” he said last week. “But just the fact he is interested is very encouraging from our point of view.

“I want to get the best goalkeeper I possibly can. Not only for the league and Europe but also someone who can fill Artur's shoes - and he's one who can.

"He will come up and have a look and see if he fancies it. I'd like to speak to him myself and see what he is thinking. But the fact they have made the initial contact is very encouraging.”
