Celtic unveiled Efrain Juarez as their latest signing on Monday and the Mexican immediately pledged to give his all for the team. Juarez, who has joined from UNAM Pumas and signed a four-year contract at the Parkhead club.
On being introduced to the media, Juarez was asked where his preferred position was and the player made it clear he would let Neil Lennon decide how best to use his talents. Even after playing at full back and in the middle of the pitch for his country at the World Cup in South Africa he could not pick a favoured starting spot.
“I don’t know[what my best position is],” he said. “
“From the right back, or midfield is the same. I always work for the starting XI and for the good of the team.
“To represent these colours, I would play in goal."
Before anyone took the notion that he would be the long term replacement for Artur Boruc, Juarez quickly added: “It’s a joke”. However, he made it clear that being part of Lennon’s new look first team was his priority, regardless of position.
The player’s versatility will add to the competition for places in Lennon’s squad. At right-back, new recruit Cha Du-Ri will be hoping to make the position his own but Andreas Hinkel and Paul Caddis will both compete for the position even as both as linked with moves away from the club.
In midfield, Juarez may be asked to occupy a defensive midfield role. Scott Brown, Aiden McGeady, Scott Brown, Marc Crosas, Ki Sung-Yueng, Paddy McCourt and Niall McGinn will all be in Lennon’s thoughts for what is likely to be a four man midfield.
Celtic face a crucial Champions League qualifier on Wednesday night against Braga and Juarez has declared himself ready to play. If the Celtic management decide to pitch him straight in against the Portuguese side he may get an early indication of where Lennon wants to deploy him, though the player could find his willingness to help wherever he can provides a welcome selection problem.
