While the Scottish press praised Celtic’s spirited performance in their 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid, the Spanish papers weren’t quite so kind.
As Neil Lennon’s men were described as “gritty, willing workers” at home, in Madrid the Hoops’ stars were being mentioned in very different terms.
AS were highly critical of Georgios Samaras labelling the attacker "a waste of talent", adding: “The Greek striker has everything minus interest, as if he doesn’t like football.”
The paper was fierce with their criticism of Beram Kayal and goalkeeper Fraser Forster for their part in the Arda Turan’s winning goal.
On the duo they said: “Kayal, you almost have to lie on the ground to achieve not clear the ball, and Forster, graceful as an elephant.”
Marca were slightly more reserved, simply claiming Celtic ‘were no match’ for Atletico.
Barcelona-based paper El Mundo Deportivo admired Manzano’s professionalism as they qualified for the next stage of the competition.
However they felt Samaras performed well in the first half, even calling Daniel Majstorovic ‘a giant’.
