James Forrest prepared to put team's goals ahead of personal glory

Celtic winger James Forrest was delighted to win the Young Player of the Year award at the Clydesdale Bank but says he’d put the team before personal awards every time.

The 20-year-old has played a key part in the Parkhead club’s SPL title triumph, earning a place in Craig Levein’s Scotland squad in the process.

And the Ayrshire-born player says he took great satisfaction in helping Neil Lennon’s men achieve their goal for the campaign.

It was a big night for the Glasgow side as they picked up four awards at the league’s end-of-season bash.

And Forrest insists Lennon and Player of the Year Charlie Mulgrew deserve their awards.

He said: “It’s obviously good at the end of the season to get a personal award but the main thing this year was to win the league and we’ve done that.

“Up until March I’d played a lot of games so I was always confident.

“He [Lennon] gave me my chance and hopefully I’ve repaid him with what I’ve been doing on the park and hopefully I can continue to do that.

“We’ll get a good pre-season under our belts and hopefully we can qualify for the Champions League and get better by playing better teams.”

And speaking about club and international team-mate Mulgrew, he added:“He’s been top class from start to finish, he’s been tremendous.

"To be fair a lot of the boys this season have done well and it’s good we’ve got a few awards.
