Dundee United’s pre-season friendly with Premier League side Everton has been postponed for 24 hours after heavy rain hit Scotland.

Peter Houston’s men were set to take on the Merseyside club at Tannadice on Wednesday before a waterlogged pitch meant the game had to be rescheduled for Thursday at 7.45pm.

Motherwell’s match against Arbroath at Gayfield has fallen victim to the weather, the second game the Steelmen have seen cancelled so far this summer.

Hearts will face Falkirk tonight but may be forced to stage the match at Alloa’s Recreation Park if the Falkirk Stadium doesn’t pass a pitch inspection.

Dunfermline’s planned match against East Fife will now take place on Thursday, July 19.

The cancellations raise further questions about the viability of introducing summer football in Scotland.

After weeks of postponements last winter, the SPL introduced a winter break for the first time since 2002/03.

Starting after games on January 2, the interval creates two free weekends in January. SPL secretary Ian Blair said the decision had been made after consultation with supporters.
