Dundee FC chief executive Scot Gardiner says the club have submitted an application to join the SPL in the unlikely event Scotland’s top division expands in time for next season.

The Tayside club currently sit second in the table, fifteen points behind runaway leaders Ross County.

In recent weeks debate over league reconstruction has reared its head with Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell revealing they would be open to the idea of a 14-team championship if there was a split of six and eight sides.

And while there are currently no plans to move to a bigger league, Gardiner says it would have been foolish not to submit an application.

He said:  “Celtic’s CEO, Peter Lawwell, has already called for an expansion of the SPL to 14 teams, and with the uncertainty currently surrounding the game, nothing can be ruled out.

“I discussed this with the club board and we made sure our application to the SPL was submitted by last week’s deadline, as this was the sensible thing to do .

“What’s more, the top four sides in the division get a bye in next year’s Scottish Cup 3^rd Round, so from a football perspective, winning our remaining games is still important.”
