Hamilton have signed French striker Joel Thomas for a third time ahead of the new SPL season. The club have confirmed that free agent Thomas has signed a six-month contract at New Douglas Park.

Thomas originally signed for Accies in 2008 after a stint at Kaiserslautern’s second team. The striker failed to score in just over a year in Lanarkshire and was sold to Colchester for £125,000 last summer. However, he returned to Hamilton on loan in January and chipped in with three goals in the second half of the season.

Billy Reid said he was hoping it would be third time lucky for a forward who had not been prolific in his previous two spells at the club. The Hamilton manager said a half-season contract would offer the player a chance to impress.

“We sold Joel to Colchester last year but he came back on loan at the end of last season and scored three goals in our last four games,” Reid said.

“He showed a bit of potential at that time so after he was released by Colchester we gave him a deal until January.

“That gives him a chance to come back and show what he can do.”

Reid has also completed the signing of  Jonathan Routledge on loan from Wigan Athletic but the midfielder is unlikely to feature in the club’s SPL opener against Aberdeen.

“We’ll need to give him some time because he’s come from reserve football,” Reid explained.

“He’ll come in and freshen things up for us. I’ve been told he did well [on loan] in Sweden so we’ve given him a chance.”
