Wayne Foster wants his iconic derby moment eclipsed in Scottish Cup final

Wayne Foster knows all about the adulation that comes with netting the winner against your city rivals.

The Englishman’s name still rings out from the Tynecastle terraces 18 years on from his dramatic cup quarter final goal against Hibs at Easter Road.

While the Lancastrian former striker is happy that the fans continue to buy his round at the bar wherever he goes around Gorgie, he hopes that his iconic nutmug of Jim Leighton can finally be bettered on Saturday.

Foster said: “I’m enjoying the build up to the cup final and it’s going to be a great occasion.

“We’re still talking about that goal 18 years further down the road. I had no idea it would become so iconic and I don’t think very many other people did either.

“I still get free pints bought for me and all the fans want to chat about it.

“I really hope somebody scores a goal, hopefully a Hearts player, and it puts it all to bed at last.”

Foster is delighted that the Edinburgh sides are getting their day in the sun at Hampden and believes the importance of the tie cannot be underestimated.

He is backing Hearts and hopes that his old club can overcome Hibs over 90 minutes.

Foster said: “It’s never happened for over 100 years. You get Celtic and Rangers meeting each other quite regularly in the final but for Hearts and Hibs this is absolutely massive.

“If this never happens again then whoever scores the winner is going to be an absolute legend.”
