Hearts boss has no fears over using limited cash to replace departed stars

John McGlynn believes his experience of operating on low resources at Raith Rovers will stand him in good stead as Hearts manager.

The former Tynecastle coach was named as replacement to Paulo Sergio on Tuesday, having spent six years in Kirkcaldy gaining experience as his own man.

Having brought through a number of young, talented players through to the Hearts first team in his previous spell, and guiding Raith Rovers to the heights of a Scottish Cup semi-final, the boss believes he has the ability to maintain the club’s recent success.

"I had to work on a very tight budget at Raith, I had to wheel and deal and duck and dive and bring in loan players," he said.

"Whether that can be available here remains to be seen but I've certainly worked on a shoestring budget.

"I've worked with young players, players that have come from Hearts and done a really, really good job.

"I've got the opportunity now to work with guys like Jamie Walker, Jason Holt, David Smith, Denis Prychynenko, the guys who were at Raith Rovers last year.

"I've worked with David Templeton in the past and other young players like Johnny Russell and David Goodwillie."

Key players such as Rudi Skacel, Craig Beattie and Ian Black have left Gorgie this summer, but McGlynn says there is money available to replace them.

"There are one or two areas in the team, because players have moved on, where we are short," he said. "So there is a priority to try and bring some players in.

"There will not be huge funds but there are funds there and we'll do the best we possibly can to bring in players to enhance the football club."
