Hearts doubled their lead against Aberdeen with a fine finish from young striker Callum Paterson.
The hosts were already one goal to the good thanks to Ryan Stevenson’s penalty but underlined their superiority with Paterson’s strike.
A diagonal ball sent Gordon Smith free on the right flank and he cut inside before cutting the ball back to Paterson, who angled the ball past Jamie Langfield and just inside the far post.
Paterson had been introduced as a half-time substitute for fisrt scorer Stevenson, who had been injured in a clash of heads just before the break.
The win moved Hearts up to eighth in the SPL table and helped banish the memory of derby defeat to Hibernian in the Scottish Cup the previous week.
The Edinburgh side next face St Johnstone on SPL duty at McDiarmid Park on December 15.
