Leigh Griffiths has been offered a two match ban by the Scottish FA’s compliance officer, the third time the Hibernian player has been in trouble with the governing body in the last six weeks.
The striker was caught on camera making an offensive gesture to home supporters while taking a corner kick during Hibs’ 3-2 defeat to St Johnstone at the weekend.
In accordance with rule 200, the compliance officer has offered Griffiths a two game suspension. His club have until 3pm on Wednesday to accept the ban, or refer the matter to a fast track tribunal.
The fixed suspension for making an offensive gesture is a one-match ban. But, if a player is reported for another sending-off offence in the same season and in the same competition, he automatically incurs an additional one-game suspension.
Griffiths previously served a one-game suspension for making an offensive gesture to Rangers supporters in an SPL fixture in December.
He was also banned for a gesture towards his own fans in Hibs’ Scottish Cup game with Cowdenbeath, but did not incur an additional game’s ban because the incident took place in a different competition.
If Griffiths ultimately serves a ban for his latest misdemeanour, he will miss his club’s next three matches.
SPL games with Rangers and Aberdeen fall on either side of the Scottish Cup fifth round with Kilmarnock, ruling the 21-year-old out until the visit of Celtic on Sunday, February 19.
