Final countdown on Hibs career for out-of-contract captain Ian Murray

Ian Murray admits he may be entering the final weeks of his Hibernian career.

The club captain has featured just once for the team since Pat Fenlon arrived in November, a troubling hip problem keeping him sidelined for the majority of that time.

With his contract up in the summer, Murray has not been given any indication he will be kept at Easter Road and the life-long Hibee admits he has balance his own chances of playing against his emotional ties to the club.

Murray said: “I want to play football first and foremost. I’m not going to hang around somewhere I don’t think I’m going to play. I still think I’ve got three or four years to give at a decent level to some team.

“I love playing for Hibs, I being here and coming in to the training centre every day. Working around Edinburgh and being from here means it’s a club close to my heart of course, but I also need to do what’s right for myself and for my family.

“It could be my last game, I’ve heard nothing from anyone but equally it might not be, I don’t know.”

Murray and his team-mates travel to Inverness for the final game of the season on Saturday, before the Hampden date with arch rival Hearts on May 19.

The former Rangers player knows that beating Hibs’s 110 year cup hoodoo would be the best way to bow out in his second stint in green and white.

Murray added: “If anybody was going to leave a club then the best way is being part of a cup final squad. Being a Hibs fan of course I want to be involved and to play but I just want Hibs to win the cup.

“If I was playing for Rangers and watching Hibs v Hearts I’d want Hibs to win, I am just like that.”
