New Hibernian loan defender Ryan McGivern is looking forward to coming up against his old youth coach with he faces Kilmarnock on Saturday.
The Manchester City left back was coached by Kenny Shiels for Northern Ireland Under-17s and knows the Killie boss’ methods well.
McGivern, who now has 18 full caps for his country, has been impressed with the impact Shiels has had in Scotland and is looking forward to an SPL debut against his old mentor.
The 22-year-old said: “Obviously it was a long time ago now but even back then Kenny always managed to get the best out of his players.
“He always wanted his teams to get the ball down and play nice football and that’s something he’s done up here.
“With getting the silverware last season he has done really well, so I’m really looking forward to the game.”
McGivern’s Easter Road loan, which expires in January, is the sixth time he has been farmed out by the English Premier League champions, and he is hoping to get a new experience north of the border.
He added: “On a personal level I want to get as many games under my belt between now and the end of the loan and in doing that I want to help the team, keep them at the right end of the table and hopefully challenge for honours.”
