Rory McKenzie has signed a two-year extension to his contract with Kilmarnock.
The 19-year-old, who has made seven appearances this season, scored his first goal for the club against Dundee United back in August.
McKenzie, who also represents Scotland at youth level, spent the second half of the last campaign at Brechin City, scoring seven times in 17 appearances.
Speaking after the player had netted his first senior goal, Shiels said he was keen to lower expectations.
"You can't put a lot of weight on young Rory's shoulders week in, week out," he said.
