Alan Trouten scored twice as Ayr booked their place in the Scottish Cup fourth round with a 2-1 win over Montrose.

The Division One outfit proved too strong for their Third Division opponents, with midfielder Trouten notching in either half to ensure it will be his side facing Livingston in the next round.

The Gable Endies' Martin Boyle tested goalkeeper Kevin Cuthbert midway through the first half with a powerful effort from just inside the area.

Trouten fired the visitors ahead in the 28th minute, turning home Michael McGowan's selfless assist from 12 yards, before doubling their advantage with a superb strike from outside the area with 18 minutes left.

Jamie Winter's late 20-yard strike set up a tense finish but Ayr held on.
