Motherwell midfielder Keith Lasley has underlined the importance of not conceding an away goal as his side prepares to face Panathinaikos in the club’s first ever Champions League tie tomorrow night.
The Steelmen face a stern test from the Greek giants at Fir Park as they attempt to reach the competition’s group stage.
Speaking ahead of the game, Lasley appeared confident his team will still have a genuine chance of progressing beyond the third qualifying round when they travel to Athens next week for the second leg.
He said: “If you can you want to try and avoid the away goals. They are crucial in European football, there’s no doubt.
“A positive result for us would be to still be in the tie going to Athens.
“That is the be all and end all for us and as I said, hopefully if we can do ourselves justice on the park on Tuesday, we can do that.”
Motherwell qualified for the Champions League after UEFA refused to grant Scottish Premier League runners-up Rangers permission to play in this season’s competition.
