Rangers starlets reject new deals

John Fleck: One of two Rangers youngsters said to have rejected a new deal.

John Fleck and Danny Wilson have turned down new contract offers from Rangers, it has been reported. The highly-rated young duo, both aged 18, still have 18 months left to run on their current contracts but are expected to try their luck elsewhere when they become available at a knockdown price in July 2011.

Talks began last week between club representatives and the players’ agents and improved deals were offered to the talented pair. However, it is believed they have rejected the terms.

Wilson and Fleck are the two brightest prospects from the youth setup at Murray Park and their loss would be a blow on a competitive and financial front for the Ibrox club.

Although neither player would be able to leave on a free transfer next year, Fifa’s training compensation rules would only pay out a fraction of what the pair would be valued at under normal circumstances.

Wilson arrived on the scene this season after much clamour from the Rangers support for him to be included in the team. In the midst of a defensive crisis, he was drafted into the first team for his debut in a Co-operative Insurance Cup win at Dundee and retained his place for two Champions League games against Unirea and Stuttgart. He also featured in the recent Old Firm derby from the start.

Spurs made an offer to take him south when he was 16 and current Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp was rumoured to be lining up a £2 million offer back in November to tempt the youngster south of the border.

Fleck meanwhile made the breakthrough in 2008, making his Ibrox debut in a Scottish Cup match with East Stirlingshire. After a bright start to 2009, he was tipped by some to be a surprise call-up to George Burley’s Scotland squad, although that never materialised.

He opened the season with three starts and has gone on to make a total of 15 appearances so far this campaign. His last outing was against Dundee United in a 3-0 win at Tannadice back in December, in which he replaced Nacho Novo with five minutes remaining.

Whether either player has had their heads turned by overtures from down south remains to be seen, but Spurs’ previous interest in Wilson - and Fleck’s eternal promise - will no doubt have alerted several English Premier League managers to their sudden availability.
