Nacho Novo will weigh up options from both Greece and his native Spain before committing to a new Rangers contract. The forward, who has been in Scotland for nine years and with Rangers for nearly six, is being courted by Celta Vigo – who hail from his home region of Galicia – and Greek Super League side Larissa.
Novo, 30, is understood to be keen to extend his stay in Glasgow, but the lure of possibly finishing his career with the Spanish Second Division side may encourage him to turn down Rangers’ new contract offer.
Similarly, the riches on offer in Greece – with a yearly take home wage of £150,000 said to be on the table – may also turn his head as Larissa look to strengthen their team for next season after a poor year so far.
Former Raith Rovers and Dundee striker Novo was offered a new contract by his current employers on Wednesday, together with fellow out-of-contract player Kirk Broadfoot. Both are free to discuss their futures with other clubs, with a free transfer switch available to either in the summer.
Novo has featured 26 times for Rangers this campaign, finding the net against Queen of the South, Sevilla, St Johnstone and Hibernian. Since joining in July 2004, he has made 228 appearances, scoring 66 times.
He moved to Scotland in 2001 from Spanish club SD Huesca, joining Raith Rovers on a free transfer. He made an instant impact for the First Division side, finding the net 18 times in 33 league appearances.
A move to Premier League Dundee beckoned, where he spent two seasons – scoring 34 times – before Rangers came calling for his services. His most prolific season for his current club was his first in 2004/05, when he contributed 25 goals to a league and cup double success.
He courted controversy earlier this season when he was accused of gesturing towards Aberdeen fans after his team’s 1-0 defeat at Pittodrie. He was also pictured with his shorts lowered beneath his buttocks as he left the pitch at the end of the game.
