Many would argue that Rangers were already coasting towards the Scottish Premier League title when Celtic came to Ibrox on February 28 but Maurice Edu’s stoppage time winner put any hopes of the Hoops recovering beyond any doubt. Victory at Ibrox put the hosts 10 points clear with a game in hand and 12 games left to play, leaving Celtic’s task look all the more daunting.
Robbie Keane was making his debut in an Old Firm derby and was pinpointed as the man who would bring Tony Mowbray’s team firmly back into the title race, cutting down Rangers’ lead to a mere four points.
But the on-loan Tottenham striker was a subdued figure and struggled to cope with the attentions of Kevin Thomson throughout.
Celtic keeper Artur Boruc kept his side in it on several occasions as Ranger dominated the encounter with a seemingly endless attack. Just before the half-hour mark Boyd sent Miller racing clear on goal.
But Boruc blocked the former Celtic player's first shot then collected at the second attempt. The Pole was then equal to two efforts from Boyd as Rangers pushed for a killer goal.
Keane passed up a glorious chance 10 minutes before the interval when his goalbound volley from the edge of the area was superbly turned away by Allan McGregor in the Rangers goal.
THE FIVE MOMENTS THAT WON RANGERS THE LEAGUE
- Miller's seven point Old Firm derby rescue
- Celtic's Gary Caldwell-assisted collapse at Tynecastle
- The joy of 17 for Rangers
- Celtic's crucial mid-season mistakes
Celtic’s hopes were dented further when Scott Brown was shown a straight red card for a tussle with Kyle Lafferty 15 minutes into the second half. But the game looked to be petering out to a goalless draw before American midfielder Edu popped up.
Kris Boyd’s effort in a goalmouth scramble was frantically blocked three minutes into injury time but Edu, on as a first half replacement for Lee McCulloch, found himself in the right place at the right time to scramble the ball home.
