Danny Wilson has completed his move to Liverpool from Rangers. The English Premier League side confirmed on Wednesday that the £2 million transfer for the 18-year-old defender had gone through, a day after the Light Blues announced a deal in principle had been reached.
After completing a medical in Liverpool, the centre-back put pen to paper on a three-year contract. He told the club's official website he was delighted to have made the move.
"It's a great feeling to sign for Liverpool," he said. "Wherever you go everyone knows Liverpool FC and I am just very happy to be here.
"This is a massive challenge for me. This is one of the best leagues in the world and I will be playing for one of the biggest teams in the world.
"Coming here from Scotland, people may say I might not be ready for this, but that is a challenge I want to put on myself and that's the reason I came here.
Rangers could receive up to £5 million including add-ons for Wilson, who made 25 appearances for the club in his debut season last campaign. Liverpool had long been linked with the youngster but it did not appear as if the deal was close to completion until Tuesday night, when the player failed to show at Glasgow Airport for Rangers’ flight to Sydney.
Instead, Wilson had taken a trip to south to hold signing talks and has now become a Liverpool player.
Wilson is Roy Hodgson’s second signing since taking over as Liverpool boss, with Joe Cole added to his squad earlier this week. Wilson’s arrival has also pushed Philipp Degen towards the Liverpool exit, the Swiss defender told by Hodgson he is free to find a new club.
Wilson, who made his debut in a Co-operative Insurance Cup game against Dundee in late 2009, would have been able to leave Rangers under freedom of contract in the summer of 2011. The Ibrox club would received compensation for the player’s development but the amount would have been significantly less than the £5 million they stand to make.
Walter Smith has now been left with the task of replacing six players from his SPL title winning squad from last season. Kris Boyd and Kevin Thomson have left for Middlesbrough, while Nacho Novo, DaMarcus Beasley and Stevie Smith also walked away on a free over the summer.
