Rangers have taken utility man Richard Foster on loan from Aberdeen, with striker Andrius Velicka heading in the opposite direction. The pair will move to Ibrox and Pittodrie on respective season-long loans, with Foster having agreed personal terms on Tuesday night.

Foster, who can operate in either full-back position and on the right wing, will add versatility to Walter Smith's squad, ahead of the Champions League squad registration deadline on September 1.

The 25-year-old, who has spent his seven-year senior career with the Dons, has been a virtual ever-present for Aberdeen for the past six seasons and made his first appearance of the season in the 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock at the weekend.

Velicka is currently on international duty with Lithuania, meaning he will have to sign his forms to move to Aberdeen via fax ahead of the midnight transfer deadline. But is expected the 31-year-old will complete his switch north, boosting Mark McGhee's striking options.

Formerly of Hearts, Velicka has recovered from a serious knee injury but has failed to work his way into Rangers' first team plans, with Kenny Miller, Nikica Jelavic, Kyle Lafferty and James Beattie ahead of him in the queue for a place.

"It has all happened very quickly," Foster told Rangers' official website after his move. "I was surprised the way things have gone and I'm very excited by it.

"The Champions League is the biggest stage of all and to have a chance of playing there is terrific. You look at the teams in the group and it's going to be brilliant.

"I have never been to a Champions League match at Ibrox but having watched on TV you can see that the atmosphere is incredible so it's something that I would love to be involved in.

"This is a really good opportunity for me. I am under no illusions that I am going to walk into the team but I will work really hard to try to get there and if I do it will be a great personal achievement."
