Transfer wishlist: Rangers

As clubs continue their search for new recruits during the transfer window, STV has asked a fan from each SPL club to give their own wishlist for the January sales.

Rangers fan Stewart Franklin of Gersnet gives his opinion on what business Ally McCoist should do this month.

Which areas of the team does your side need to strengthen?
Attack has to be our priority as not only have we struggled to create chances, we've not scored enough goals of late.

Add in a recent injury for Kyle Lafferty and the doubt over Nikica Jelavic's future, and this makes our need for striking back-up an urgent one.

Do you see your team doing any business in the transfer window?
As a result of the ongoing HMRC 'queries', it's obviously very difficult to judge the financial situation at the club.

However, what is probable is that because of our European exits, a large loss is likely to be reported in the 2011/12 accounts.

Therefore, not only do we have to try and minimise that impact by raising other funds, it also means our ability to spend money is hampered. Sales are likely - it's just who and for how much.

Conversely, buys are also possible but certainly not to the scale we perhaps require. Hard decisions will have to be made - decisions the fans may not agree with.

Who would be a (semi-realistic!) fantasy signing for your team in January?
I think realism is the key here. We can't afford any fantasy signings so rather than appease fans who demand the kind of misguided investment which has led to our current problems, I'd rather we looked long term.

Do we go down the EPL loan route and leave the squad short again in 6 months time? Or do we invest in potential and ensure they develop over time to keep us competitive?

The likes of Jamie Murphy may be less glamorous than an El Hadji Diouf but would he offer more in an era where our cloth has to be cut carefully.

Are there any players coming back from injury who "could be like new players" to the squad?
Kyle Lafferty and Steven Whittaker will miss the next month or two so when they return they will add experience to our title challenge.

Whittaker has had an especially poor season but he's also capable of offering something different when playing well. We'll need them both.

Who does your team absolutely have to keep hold of during the January window?
With our attacking/creative options so limited; it's imperative we hold onto both Jelavic and Steven Davis.

Neither have performed as well as we'd hoped for the last few months but both are hugely influential when on form.

If we lose either (or both) of them then we'd struggle to replace that influence with the low budget we have available to us.

Who should they be looking to move on?
The paradox facing us here is that although our squad isn't as strong as we'd like, we also can't afford to pay people who don't contribute enough.

Thus, the biggest challenge for the manager and Gordon Smith is whether so allow a key asset to be sold in order to free up funds to strengthen other parts of the team.

For example, would the sale of Allan McGregor really hurt our SPL challenge or would it represent the fiscal security we require? No-one wants to lose one of Europe's best goalkeepers but is the bigger picture more relevant.

We could afford to lose others such as Weir, Broadfoot, McCulloch, Ortiz, McKay and Little but other than saved wages, fees would be minimal so there would be next to no money to replace them. It's going to be a long month.
