Fabio Cannavaro has said there is no fear in the Italy squad ahead of their final World Cup group match against Slovakia. Having suffered the disappointment of draws against Paraguay and New Zealand, the holders would exit the competition at the first stage if they fail to get a positive result against Vladimir Weiss’ side.
The Italy captain acknowledged their slow start but said that once his team won their first match they would improve as the tournament progressed. Italy have a reputation as “slow starters” but had registered a win in their first two matches at each of the past three tournaments.
“We have worked hard for two years,” Cannavaro said.
“It would be a pity to return home after this game, more so considering that our best is yet to come. I just want my team to go through and to clinch our first win because that would change everything for us.
The 36-year old could make his final appearance in an Italy shirt on Thursday if Italy are knocked out. He will earn his 137th cap against Slovakia and has said that he will retire from international football after the tournament.
Cannavaro will also leave Serie A this summer to finish his career at Al Ahli in Dubai. However, before turning his attention to the next chapter of his career he dreams of lifting the World Cup again.
The defender has the task of ensuring there are no nerves in the team before they take to the field at Ellis Park. He was certain that his side would handle the pressure surrounding the team.
“The responsibility is always there because this is a World Cup,” he admitted.
“But we have no fear because that only drives you to make mistakes. In a World Cup no-one grants you a favour and we have to improve with respect to our past performances."
Italy have progressed to the later stages of the World Cup at every tournament since 1974.
