Robert Snodgrass: 'Scotland aren't here just to make up the numbers'

Robert Snodgrass insists Scotland are going into their World Cup qualifying campaign with every chance of earning a place in the 2014 tournament.

The forward is pushing for a start as Craig Levein’s side take on Serbia on Saturday, followed by the visit of Macedonia three days later.

Snodgrass was at primary school when Scotland last reached the World Cup in 1998 and says the squad are confident and optimistic over their chances of making it to Rio.

"The best countries in the world go and do it every time they are called upon," he said.

"We are not here to make up the numbers. There is a firm belief about this squad that we can go and pick up maximum points and qualify.

"There is a good mood about the camp, there always has been every time I have been here.

"We have a job to do as footballers and we will approach each game thinking we can win it. It starts on Saturday and everybody is raring to go."

Snodgrass was one of a number of players preferred to Celtic's Kris Commons, who missed out on a place in the squad despite a strong start to the season at club level.

"The gaffer would like to have that headache rather than not having competition," said Snodgrass.

"You are coming up against tough opposition so you need to be 100% which is why it is good for the gaffer to have these headaches.

"If you are named in the squad you need to be ready, as simple as that.

"I am not going to say I will be in the team on Saturday. I am in the squad but I have been in a few squads and I missed out on a few squads through niggly injuries and stuff but I am here now and I feel 100% and ready to go."
