Sir Alex Ferguson has hit back at rumours Scotland captain Darren Fletcher will announce his retirement from the game, insisting the player is on the road to recovery.

Speculation before Monday night’s Manchester derby suggested the 28-year-old would be forced to quit due to the chronic bowel condition which ended his season back in December.

However the Old Trafford boss rejected the claims and insists he remains hopeful the player could return in time for pre-season training.

"We're hoping he will start pre-season training," said Ferguson.

"He is on the recovery road at the moment in the sense of some work he is doing.

"But we can't assess it because we don't know enough about it.

"Darren's medical people are dealing with it and our doctor has a good idea of the situation but at the moment the boy is doing his best to come back."
