Scottish Football League unlikely to amend 'ambiguous' Rangers vote

SFL clubs will descend on Hampden on Friday to decide Rangers' league fate.

The Scottish Football League are unlikely to alter the resolutions its member clubs will vote on for the admission of newco Rangers into their set-up.

Clyde raised a complaint on Wednesday that Resolution One, which deals with the club being allowed into the SFL, did not specifically state which division they would immediately be placed in.

Gary Ballantyne, the Broadwood club's commercial director, told STV on Wednesday: "The resolutions are fundamentally flawed. What we need is to remove ambiguity and get clarity".

The second matter put forward for a vote asks clubs to give the league board a mandate to put Rangers into the First Division, provided they are happy with a raft of proposals put forward on league reconstruction and a change to financial distribution.

Clyde fear the failure to mention a specific division gives the SFL board the power to act outside the interests of its clubs and decide themselves which league the newco should play in.

STV understands representatives will be given assurances ahead of Friday’s vote that the board will follow the instruction given by its members, but won’t change the wording of the first resolution.

Should SFL clubs approve Rangers’ admission to the league, they will then be placed on a 14-day probation period until the Scottish FA rule on whether to transfer the old company’s membership of the governing body to Green’s business.

As soon as a vote in approval of their admission is passed, newco Rangers will automatically become members of the league and will be subject to the mandatory period of two full seasons before they would be able to tender any resignation.

SFL clubs can vote 66% in favour of bypassing that requirement at any later date.
