Heart of Midlothian have asked Raith Rovers for permission to speak to John McGlynn as they look to appoint a replacement for Paulo Sergio.
The Edinburgh club parted company with Sergio earlier this month after failing to agree a new contract with the Portuguese boss.
Hearts have now approached Raith over McGlynn and the First Division club have said that they would not block the bid to speak to their manager.
A club statement said: "Raith Rovers FC announces that Heart of Midlothian FC have formally sought permission to speak to John McGlynn regarding the vacant manager’s position at Tynecastle.
"The Board of Directors has an excellent relationship with John and has no wish to stand in the way of his career progression should an opportunity arise for him. Accordingly we have acceded to Hearts’ request."
McGlynn was previously a coach at Tynecastle and served as caretaker manager at Hearts on two occasions.
He joined Raith Rovers in 2006 and guided the Fife club to promotion to the First Division in 2009. He won the PFA Scotland manager of the year award two seasons later after leading Rovers in what proved to be an unsuccessful title challenge.
