Celtic dominated the January sales in the Scottish Premier League with Tony Mowbray making a total of 18 changes to his squad. Eight players came through the revolving doors at Parkhead, with ten heading out in the opposite direction.
Dominating the deadline day headlines was the loan signing of Tottenham Hotspur striker Robbie Keane. The Republic of Ireland forward, 29, joined his boyhood heroes as they look for the goals to try and shoot down Rangers’ 10 point lead at the top of the SPL.
Fellow forwards Morten Rasmussen and Diomansy Kamara also arrived in the east end of Glasgow, as strikers Scott McDonald and Chris Killen headed to Middlesbrough. Fringe forward Cillian Sheridan was also shipped out, going on his second loan spell of the season, this time to St Johnstone.
Celtic’s other additions were defenders Jos Hooiveld, Edson Braafheid and Thomas Rogne, as well as midfielders Ki-Sung-Yueng and Paul Slane. Heading out were goalkeeper Mark Brown, defenders Danny Fox, Stephen McManus (loan) and Gary Caldwell and midfielders Barry Robson, Graham Carey (loan) and Willo Flood.
City rivals Rangers failed to strengthen their squad but shipped out two midfielders, cutting short unused Jerome Rothen’s loan spell and selling lynchpin Pedro Mendes to Sporting Lisbon. The Ibrox club were linked with a number of transfer deadline day moves that never came off, while their key target for the window of signing Kris Boyd on an extended contract is still in the balance.
Elsewhere in the SPL, there was significant movement at Aberdeen with Steven MacLean and Jim Paterson arriving on loan from Plymouth. Heading out however were key striker Lee Miller, who moved to Middlesbrough, and young defender Chris McGuire, who moved to Kilmarnock on loan.
Third placed Hibs moved to end their eternal goalkeeping problems with a swoop for Brighton’s Graeme Smith and then Celtic ‘keeper Brown, who both arrived on free transfers. They also bolstered their striking options with a swoop for former Rangers forward Alan Gow, who moved on loan from Plymouth.
It was also a case of one keeper in, one out at Dundee United with Slovakian stopper Dusan Pernis arriving to replace Nicky Weaver, who joined English Premier League side Burnley.
There were also many changes at Hamilton, with two former players returning to New Douglas Park to try and improve their fortunes. Defender Brian Easton and forward Joel Thomas returned until the end of the summer. They were joined by David van Zanten and Stuart Elliot, while defender Marvin Andrews headed for Queen of the South.
New Kilmarnock boss Jimmy Calderwood brought in three as he tries to pull his team away from the wrong end of the table, tying up loan deals for former Don Scott Severin and Rob Kiernan from Watford, together with the capture of defender Chris McGuire from Aberdeen.
Falkirk added experience to try and lift themselves off the foot of the table, with former Celtic midfielder Colin Healy coming in from Ipswich and striker Enoch Showunmi arriving from Leeds. St Johnstone meanwhile made one swoop, bringing in Bolton defender Mark Connolly on loan until the end of the season.
At Hearts, it was a case of one in, one out in midfield as new manager Jim Jefferies made one late addition to his pool by picking up the highly-rated Ryan Stevenson from Ayr United. Midfielder Stephen Husband, who had been with Livingston on loan in the first half of the season, departed for Blackpool.
At Fir Park, Craig Brown kept Everton loan duo John Ruddy and Lukas Jutkiewicz until the end of the season and also brought in former Celtic player Michael McGlinchey from A-League side Central Coast.
Finally at New St Mirren Park, Buddies boss Gus McPherson was hit by the loss of talented midfielder Stephen McGinn, who left for Watford. He brought in an Old Firm double to atone for that loss, signing Rangers’ Rory Loy and Celtic’s Graham Carey on loan for the remainder of the season.
