Rangers v St Mirren: The home side can open up a 13-point gap on Celtic with a win against St Mirren.

Madjid Bougherra is an injury doubt for Rangers as they welcome St Mirren to Ibrox for the two sides fifth meeting of the season, with at least one game still to play in the Co-operative Insurance Cup final later this month. Don’t forget, you can keep up-to-date with the game live thanks to STV Sport’s live Saturday updates.

The defender has been struggling with a hamstring injury and looks set to miss the clash at Ibrox, with Danny Wilson likely to start instead. Lee McCulloch has been passed fit after an ankle knock kept him out of Scotland`s win over Czech Republic on Wednesday.

Defender Chris Innes has been passed fit for the visitors, having recovered from a calf injury picked up in last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Hamilton.

Fellow defender Jack Ross is still out with an ankle ligament injury while the on-loan Rory Loy is not allowed to play against his parent club.

St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson claims the structure of Scottish football means the possibility of facing the same opponents six or seven times in a season is "inevitable."

"It is inevitable that meeting teams so often is going to happen within Scottish football because of its size," said MacPherson. "You can meet another SPL team three or four times in the league, depending on the split, and there is the likelihood that the SPL teams will get to the latter stages of the cups and you will get drawn against each other.

"So it is inevitable. But you won't get many St Mirren supporters complaining. They are in a cup final. The directors won't complain because of the revenue it brings in through cup games and replays so there are positives.

"We must be positive going into this game and if we do have that belief, then there is no reason why we can't get a draw or hopefully a win."

Rangers boss Walter Smith meanwhile says referees are man enough to own up to their mistakes following a week of high-profile fallout after Celtic's Scott Brown was sent off in the Old Firm derby. Referee Dougie McDonald refused to change his decision upon appeal, angering the Parkhead club.

Smith though feels the current system, which sees the match official responsible for the original punishment to review their call, is acceptable.

"That's the way it is, with the referee having the final decision after looking at it again," said Smith. "We had the same thing with Kenny Miller after he got sent off against Dundee United earlier in the season.

"I do think, if a referee goes in and has a look at it and is honest enough about it, that's sufficient.

"I don't think there is any great need for a change. I don't think a referee will be frightened to change his mind if he sees that he's wrong."

Speaking of the game with St Mirren, Smith added: "I don't think the game will be very much different from the ones we have had in recent weeks."
