New Aberdeen striker Andrius Velicka says he has a point to prove to himself by playing regular football. The Lithuanian signed for Mark McGhee’s side just before the transfer deadline in a loan deal that saw Richard Foster move in the opposite direction.

Velicka missed all of last season when he ruptured knee ligaments in his first game on loan at Bristol City. The international striker, who cost Rangers £1 million from Viking Stavanger in 2008, said he wanted to show that he can still score goals.

“At first I need to prove to myself that I can play good football and at a high level, so I’m going to fight,” Velicka said.

“I think it’s better for me because I just want to play now. I think in Aberdeen I will get this opportunity to play.

“It’s about getting minutes on the pitch. At Rangers I think I didn’t get a lot of games and after that injury I got last year. So the main thing is to play for me.”

The forward, who is currently with the Lithuania squad preparing for Friday’s match with Scotland, admitted he did not think he had a future at Ibrox. Despite Kris Boyd leaving the club in the summer, Velicka found himself even further down the pecking order after James Beattie and Nikica Jelavic were signed.

“After injury it was difficult for me to get into the team,” he added.

“Obviously I didn’t play much before and they bought two more strikers. The best thing for me was to move somewhere else so I can get time.”
