Scotland's Pittodrie heroics against Austria in the qualifiers for the 2011 European Under-21 Championships has earned them a play-off game with Iceland for a place in the tournament in Denmark.

Iceland, who finished runners-up in qualifying group five, pipped holders Germany to a place in the play-offs by four points, drawing with them in Magdeburg and then winning 4-1 against the 2009 finalists in August this year.

Eyjolfur Sverrisson's team scored more goals than any of the 52 teams involved in the qualifying group stages, finding the net on 29 occasions.

14 of those goals however came against a San Marino team which shipped 51 in eight games, while a further six came in a 6-2 win over Northern Ireland in Belfast, in which Aberdeen's Josh Magennis scored his team's consolations.

Familiar names eligible for the Iceland Under-21 squad include Hearts defender Eggert Jonsson, who may find himself in the senior squad who have a fixture with Portugal on the same date as the play-off second leg.

Icelandic club Breidablik, who were beaten by Motherwell in the qualifying rounds of this season's Europa League, are also well represented in the squad with five of their players in the squad which lost 3-1 in their last game against Czech Republic.

Amongst that quintet is Alfred Finnbogason, who showed glimmers of his potential against the Steelmen without troubling their rearguard in a 4-0 aggregate win for Craig Brown's team.

The two-legged play-off fixture will take place on October 7 and 11, with Scotland away in the first leg before hosting Iceland at Easter Road.

Chris Maguire's 89th minute winner against qualification rivals Austria on Tuesday booked Scotland's place in the final qualifying round, with Billy Stark's team topping Group 10 ahead of Belarus on goal difference.

The seven play-off winners will go forward to join hosts Denmark in the tournament, which gets underway on June 11, 2011.

Full draw: England v Romania, Holland v Ukraine, Spain v Croatia, Switzerland v Sweden, Iceland v Scotland, Czech Republic v Greece, Italy v Belarus.
