Robbie Keane celebrates first Celtic goal

Robbie Keane scored his first goal for Celtic in their 4-2 Scottish Cup win over Dunfermline an admitted he had faced tough opposition in the match. Celtic had to bounce back from 2-1 down and Keane’s second-half penalty ensured his side’s passage to the next round.

The Republic of Ireland striker had been left out of the starting line-up, as had Aiden McGeady but manager Tony Mowbray had to call on Scottish football’s highest-paid player to help his team through a difficult tie. Keane came off the bench at half-time to win and score a 67th minute penalty that gave Celtic breathing space.

The striker was delighted with his goal but said victory in the knockout tie was more important than personal plaudits.

"Today the most important thing was getting the win - they certainly made it difficult for us," Keane said.

"It's about the team and about the squad and the lads who came in today were superb."

Celtic boss Mowbray was disappointed by the manner in which his team had conceded two goals but happy with the performance overall. He spoke in glowing terms about the impact made by his star signing.

"He adds real quality, real class,” Mowbray said. "His quality in the final third made the difference."

"I thought we controlled the game pretty well, although it was disappointing to lose the goals."

Celtic will now progress to the quarter finals of the Active Nation Scottish Cup. The draw will be made at Hampden Park on Wednesday February 10.

Performances like this are what makes the faithful question Mowbray, not the constant witch-hunt by many in the media. as Celtic fans we already know and have done for years that the media want to make things as difficult as possible for theguys in the hot seat in Paradise. Is Mogga the man for the job? Of course not. But he does have a lot to contribute to Celtic. The board do need to replace Tony at the helm and let him work in the background doing what he is trying to do now, but with less revenge stuff from the media. A strong manager would get past all this stuff. Mowbray isn't strong enough to be that front line guy with a club of our stature in world soccer. Todays game though was not about us ever being in trouble. It was about us taking a while to get out of the gate while Dunfermline played out of their skins. It is worth noting though that even playing their best, and Celtic being so poor in that first half, the gap was humungous. Dunfermline are third or fourth rate, but credit to them for at least having as go. We know Rangers and Hearts won't be doing that! Celtic can write the season off and prepare for an attack next season. Hail Hail Robbie. You are a class act.
