New deal: Parkhead club look to offer Boruc a new contract.
Talks have begun to extend Artur Boruc’s contract at Celtic, Tony Mowbray has confirmed. The club have opened discussions with the Polish goalkeeper’s representatives to extend his current deal.
The stopper is out of contract at the end of next season but the Parkhead club have moved to tie the keeper down long-term. With the keeper having been the subject of interest from England and abroad, Celtic are looking to thrash out an agreement that will prevent Boruc from seeing out next season and moving on a free transfer.
Tony Mowbray confirmed discussions had opened but would not divulge any details about the terms on offer.
“What I will say is that conversations have been had with Artur and his advisors, but whatever we discuss stays in-house,” the Celtic manager said.
The club paid Legia Warsaw £1.1 million to bring Boruc to Glasgow in 2005. Though he has since lost his international place, the player has built a reputation that has seen him linked with a number of clubs, most recently German giants Bayern Munich.
The talks indicate that Boruc is part of Mowbray’s long-term plans as he looks to rebuild the playing squad at Parkhead. Fellow Pole Lukasz Zaluska is Boruc’s deputy at the club, with highly rated youngster Dominic Cervi also in reserve.
Recent newspaper reports have suggested Mowbray was considering a bid for Everton keeper John Ruddy, who has impressed on loan at Motherwell. However, the moves to extend Boruc’s deal suggest that the Celtic boss sees the 30-year old as his first choice keeper for the next campaign.
Boruc has been in fine form this season, though Celtic have been criticised for their defensive performances as a whole. The keeper has been operating behind a back four that has undergone constant change due to transfers and injury but has put in a number of performances that have reignited interest from elsewhere.
