New Celtic signing Efrain Juarez has further endeared himself to his new supporters by citing the club’s appearance in the 2003 Uefa Cup final as a moment remembered by football fans around the world. Martin O’Neill’s team lost the match against Porto in Seville 3-2 after extra-time but the endearing image of the game remains the numbers of fans who travelled to Spain for the occasion.
Juarez finally put pen to paper on a four year contract with the Hoops last Thursday evening, after being given a work permit to move to Europe for the second time in his career. The versatile player, who can play at right-back or in midfield, had a spell with Barcelona during his development from 2006 to 2008.
While estimations as to how many Celtic fans made the trip to Seville seven years ago often range from 50,000 to 100,000, Juarez offered a diplomatic guess at the amount when he met the press for the first time on Monday afternoon.
The Mexican, who has moved from UNAM Pumas, says it was that moment which sprung to mind when Celtic’s name were mentioned over a possible transfer.
“I remember the final with Porto in Seville,” Juarez revealed. “It was amazing. Amazing fans, amazing club. 60,000 fans going to Seville, it was amazing. This is a big club and more recognise it in Mexico and the world.”
Celtic’s new number four flew in on Saturday but already knew plenty about what new experiences lie in wait for him in Scotland, making reference to the weather during his first appearance.
Also questioned was Juarez’s knowledge of the Old Firm derby and the player didn’t give too much away. The 22-year-old giving a guarded response to a match he will undoubtedly play a key role in this season, simply saying: “It is a big match. It is very passionate and exciting.”
JUAREZ CHECKS IN AT CELTIC PARK
Juarez joins Cha Du-Ri, Joe Ledley, Charlie Mulgrew and Daryl Murphy in joining Celtic this summer, with Israeli midfielder Biram Kayal expected to join last this week and Scunthorpe United striker Gary Hooper currently in Glasgow for signing talks.
Having received his paperwork last week, Juarez is eligible to play in Celtic’s Champions League third qualifying round match with Braga on Wednesday. However, after his exertions at this summer’s World Cup, the player says it will be done to new boss Neil Lennon to decide whether or not he is worthy of inclusion.
