Rangers will not be a selling club during this January transfer window, according to manager Walter Smith.
The club announced a loss of £12.7million in annual figures published last month, taking the net debt to £31.9million.
But Smith says that he has been assured there will be no pressure on him to get rid of his players. He said: “The last two windows there has been pressure on us to sell but by some miracle of accountancy, we don’t seem to be under pressure in this transfer window. That’s good as far as I’m concerned.”
Asked if there would be any scope for new arrivals at Ibrox, Smith admitted: “Only if we get a buyer. It’s not possible otherwise.”
Several Rangers players have been linked with moves: Goalkeeper Alan McGregor, defenders Madjid Bougherra and Danny Wilson, midfielders Steven Davis and Pedro Mendes and strikers Kris Boyd and John Fleck have all been linked to exits from Scotland.
But Bougherra, whose late return from international duty sparked a training ground fall out with Kenny Miller, is still in Smith’s plans.
The defender had been dropped in favour of young Wilson for Rangers’ match against Stuttgart. But Smith insisted: “I never said he wouldn’t [play again]. He will play again.
“He plays at full back for his national side so there is a possibility that we can use him there.”
