Rangers midfielder McCulloch could make Scotland U-turn

Rangers midfielder Lee McCulloch has said that he may consider making himself available to play for Scotland. The player retired from international football in September 2008.

McCulloch told the SFA at the time that he no longer wanted to be selected by then manager George Burley in order to dedicate himself to his Rangers career. However, he could now be set to reverse that decision and answer the call to join the Euro 2012 qualification campaign if needed.

The midfielder, who has been one of Rangers’ most consistent performers this season, was cagey about whether or not he would pull on the dark blue jersey again, hinting that he may not be selected even if available. He did suggest though that he would consult with club boss Walter Smith and the new national team manager.

“I think I need to have a word with the gaffer and Craig Levein,” he admitted.

“The middle of the park is the strongest part of Scotland’s team so there are six or seven players that are possibly younger than me that would come into the frame.

“So I don’t want to say that I would come back or not. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”

New Scotland manager Levein has declared that all players would be given a clean slate as he attempts to lead the country to the next European Championships. Kris Boyd, who quit the Scotland setup after becoming frustrated with his lack of opportunities under Burley, is set to be recalled as is Rangers team-mate Allan McGregor.

Mcgregor and former Ibrox captain Barry Ferguson were banned from the international squad after the notorious “Boozegate” incident but have spoken to Levein about a return. McGregor has indicated he will be a part of the next squad but Ferguson is said to be unsure about the effect a Scotland recall could have on his rejuvenated club form at Birmingham City.
