Winner: Edu seals Old Firm victory Pic: ©STV
Marice Edu is hoping his last minute winner in Rangers’ 1-0 defeat over Celtic will allow to kick-start his season which has been spent sidelined with injury. Edu picked up the injury last May and has featured in just a handful of games this season, but with the World Cup imminent, the American is eager to force his way back into to contention.
The midfielder replaced Lee McCulloch in the Old Firm clash at Ibrox on Sunday and netted immediately only to have it disallowed. But his last gasp strike in front of the goalmouth put Rangers ten points clear of Celtic at the summit of the SPL with a game in hand and he admitted the goal will spur him on to cement his place.
"I've had kind of a rough season with all the injuries and it's been stop-start," he said.
"When I come into the team, I'm just trying to get as many minutes as possible and try to get back to top form.
"To score a goal in a game like this - and for it to be the winner - is a great feeling. I'm going to use it as the extra push to keep working hard and try to stay in the side."
Edu described the moment he launched at the ball to bundle it over the line: "It was just pure excitement.
"I had a goal called back earlier and I was a little bit disappointed about that. But the boys fought well and we created a couple of chances where I thought we could have scored.
"To score the winning goal in an Old Firm match is just an unbelievable feeling. It went the way we wanted it to go in the end."
As for the disallowed goal due to a Kenny Miller hand ball, Edu said he wasn’t aware of the incident at the tie.
"It's hard to say, I didn't really see what happened. I just saw the ball coming and shot it and saw it going in.
"That's all that mattered to me. But it was called back and that's football, you just have to get on with it."
