Veteran: Weir eager to play on at Rangers Pic: ©STV
Rangers captain David Weir is pondering his future at the Ibrox club as he approaches his 40th birthday. The defender admits the prospect of retirement is unappealing but maintains he doesn’t want to embarrass himself by overstaying his welcome.
Weir, who has taken the initial steps into coaching, picked up February's SPL Player of the Month award for the first time after playing in every minute of Rangers’ 27 league matches this season.
“Of course, it’s nice to get awards but you are never satisfied. I think I could’ve played better in a lot of games – last weekend’s, for example.”
Weir has been encouraged by the support offered to him by manager Walter Smith, who he hopes will remain at the club pending a possible takeover, and refused to rule out extending his stay at the club.
“I do think about it, but it’s not my focus or priority,” he said. “I’ve thought about coaching and I’ve completed my A badge. I’ll go on to do my pro-license at some stage.
“Part of the reason I’ve played as long as I have is that I’ll miss it when I retire but I do know that at some point I’m going to have to find something to take up the slack.
“I don’t know what the answer is yet about my future. I’d never say never about staying here next year. I’d be surprised, but you never know.
“Winning a treble wouldn’t change anything. I’d only keep playing if I felt I could do a job. Everyone said last year I could go out on a high having won the league, but that’s not important.
“I want to try and play on but only as long as I’m not getting to the stage where I’m embarrassing myself or the club.”
