In it Together: Weir praises team spirit Pic: ©STV
Walter Smith’s treble chasing Rangers side have not had any fresh blood for almost two years. The previous three transfer windows passed by without out so much as a single signing; the financial troubles at Ibrox have seen to that. Despite that, and depsite suggestions elsewhere that they lack stars or flair, the team are on the verge of securing their second consecutive SPL title and are still in the running for a clean sweep of domestic silverware.
On paper it may be surprising to find that Rangers are leading Glasgow rivals Celtic by 13 points in the SPL after Tony Mowbray recruited eight players during the January transfer window including star striker Robbie Keane.
Rangers skipper David Weir is on the verge of turning 40, Allan McGregor has made the papers more for his off-field activities than his performance between the posts and midfielder Kevin Thomson has undergone knee surgery which saw him out for almost a year. All of whom are playing for a club where the manager and backroom staff have been operating without a contract amidst news of a possible takeover.
However, despite the setbacks, the team remain firmly focused on the football and Rangers skipper David Weir insists the team spirit has ensured their success.
“We have a great bunch of boys in the dressing room. Every single one of us is in this together,” said the 39-year-old.
“There are no qualms about us being at the top of our game every week. It’s about digging in and helping one another.
“There have been a lot of changes in the team since last season but we have stuck together through this.
“The atmosphere between us out on the training ground is fantastic. We have worked ever so hard and it’s now a case of finishing it off.”
The possibility of a takeover may bring new money to the Ibrox club, who have been operating to a business plan outlined by Lloyds Banking Group. Many of the squad will be looking to thrash out new deals. According to captain Weir, however, retaining the services of Walter Smith as gaffer should be priority for any new owner.
