New deal: Nacho Novo will discuss a new contract with Rangers in the coming weeks.
Nacho Novo will get back around the table with Rangers bosses to try and thrash out a new deal to keep him at Ibrox in the next few weeks. The Spanish forward, who is out of contract at the end of the season, turned down an offer of a contract extension in January but wants to stay in Glasgow with the SPL leaders.
A host of clubs from England and his homeland of Spain have been keeping tabs on Novo’s contract situation, with Celta Vigo, who hail from the same region as the 30-year-old, believed to be lining up a free transfer swoop. He also turned down a move to Greek club Larissa in January, saying he was unhappy with the terms on offer.
Novo admitted in January that the possibility of a return to Spain to play for Celta was appealing but insisted that his desire was to remain with Rangers.
"I know nothing of Celta,” Novo said. “I would say though that if there was something real from Celta, I would be excited about it. But the club haven't contacted me. I'm happy at Rangers and would like to continue for some time.
"I was contacted with an offer from Greece, but economically, it was not enough. I appreciate their interest, but, frankly, I wasn't going to go there.
"My priority is to stay with Rangers. I owe this club almost everything."
Novo has been with Rangers since 2004 after moving from Dundee and has been heavily involved in Walter Smith’s team this campaign, albeit mainly from the bench. He has made 36 appearances in the Light Blue this season, contributing seven goals.
He moved to Scotland in 2001 from Spanish club SD Huesca, joining Raith Rovers on a free transfer. He made an instant impact for the First Division side, finding the net 18 times in 33 league appearances.
A move to Premier League Dundee beckoned, where he spent two seasons, scoring 34 times, before Rangers came calling for his services. His most prolific season for his current club was his first in 2004/05, when he contributed 25 goals to a league and cup double success.
He courted controversy earlier this season when he was accused of gesturing towards Aberdeen fans after his team’s 1-0 defeat at Pittodrie. He was also pictured with his shorts lowered beneath his buttocks as he left the pitch at the end of the game.
