Rangers defender Madjid Bougherra will be back in the team for Sunday’s Scottish Cup tie against Dundee United. The Algerian international suffered a hamstring injury during the last Old Firm clash which has saw him sidelined for almost two weeks.

During his lay-off the 27-year-old missed an international friendly with Serbia and SPL matches against St Mirren and Kilmarnock, but is now ready to return to the Rangers fold.

“I just needed to take a rest because with a hamstring it’s difficult to know if it can be bad. I had to be careful. It’s been a week and half and I feel better,” said Bougherra.

He added: “I hope I can play on Sunday, I have a good chance.”

Bougherra will feature in this year’s World Cup with Algeria, who were drawn in Group C where they will face England, United States and Slovenia.

Walter Smith has welcomed the return of the experienced defender into his treble-chasing side. However, the Ibrox boss is pleased by the performance of young Danny Wilson who has filled in beside skipper David Weir at the back

“Bougherra will be fit to play against Dundee United and I’ll be glad to have him back,” said Smith.

“But Danny has been doing very well for us and has been excellent with his performances.”
