Katlego Mphela has stated his desire to move to Rangers. The South African international, currently with Mamelodi Sundowns, has been subject to enquiries from the Glasgow club over a possible transfer.
Striker Mphela, who scored the decisive goal in Bafana Bafana’s 2-1 win over France in their final World Cup group match, already has experience of playing in Europe. The 25-year-old had a two-year spell with Strasbourg from 2004 to 2006, playing only 14 times and failing to score. He also had a short, five-match loan spell with Reims, in which he also went without a goal.
He has found his goal scoring form since returning to his home country four years ago and, having put himself in the shop window with his appearances at the World Cup, Mphela says he would be keen on a move to the SPL.
“It would be a good move for me, but no one has told me anything,” Mphela told the Scottish Sun. “I'll have to call my agent and find out what he has to say about it.
“Obviously I'd love to go to a team of Rangers' quality and I'd be crazy to turn down a move. They are the Manchester United of Scottish football.”
Mphela’s agent is Steve Kapeluschnik, who also confirmed Rangers’ interest in his client but said he didn’t expect any movement from the club until they returned from their pre-season tour of Australia.
“There is a real interest from Glasgow, but there is a process that we have to go through and there is no firm offer on the table.
“Rangers are still in Australia, so we'll have to wait and see what happens in the next few days.”
MPHELA LINKED WITH RANGERS
Mphela returned to play in South Africa in 2006 with Supersport United and has proven to be a prolific scorer at international level, scoring 15 times in his 35 appearances. Eight of those goals came this year alone, scoring in friendlies with Namibia, Thailand, Colombia, Guatemala and Denmark, before his strike against the French.
Rangers have also been linked with his international team-mate Bongani Khumalo, who also scored in South Africa’s win over France. The central defender is currently signed to Supersport United but is also rumoured to be interesting Tottenham Hotspur.
