SFL vote on Rangers newco proposal put back one day until July 13

A vote on whether to accept a newco Rangers into the Scottish Football Leaaue and what division they would play in has been put back until Friday, July 13.

A decision was due to be made on Thursday, July 12 but after a meeting of the SFL board to discuss the way forward, clubs will be given an extra day before being asked to decide.

The 30 members of the league met at Hampden this week to discuss plans over allowing Rangers into the First Division.

Under those plans Charles Green’s new club would bypass the bottom two divisions in exchange for a TV rights payment of £1m and the introduction of play-offs.

A simple majority will be required in the vote with a number of clubs already indicating they will abstain due to a conflict of interest.

After seeing his new company’s application to play in the SPL “overwhelmingly” rejected, Green said the newco would play ‘in whichever division the SFL sees fit’.

SFL chief executive David Longmuir said: "Scottish Football League clubs are, over the next few days, being asked to make a crucial decision as to whether we are in a position to accommodate Rangers into the SFL. I can confirm that, at this point, no decision has been taken by the Board of the SFL or by any of our clubs.

"The time has come for all outside influences and pressures to stop. This is our national game and part of our culture so I ask all other bodies to leave it to those who have been put in this invidious position to make a decision in the best possible interests of our game.

"I have every faith in the judgement of those clubs and their Boards to make a considered and reasoned decision which will be in the best interests of the game, how it is structured, how it is governed and how it is financed.

"A specially convened meeting of all clubs is planned for Friday, 13th July, 2012."
