SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton knows he needs to pick up some extra speed for Saturday's Singapore Grand Prix qualifying after a sluggish practice.

The Briton posted seventh and ninth in the two sessions and though he suffered no specific problems on the floodlit street circuit, says he must improve somehow.

"I'm still lacking some speed in certain areas, so I need to work on that," the driver said.

"The (practice) sessions were a little up and down for me... I didn't have any major problems, but I wasn't as fast as I'd hoped to be.

"When the track gets a bit cleaner ... we'll have a better understanding of the tyres. The main thing for us is to analyse the data, try and improve the car and find some more time."
