Stephen Gallagher remains Scotland’s highest placed contender at the 2011 Open Championship as the big guns took their place at the top of the leaderboard.
Former US Open champion Lucas Glover remains tied at the top with Northern Irishman Darren Clarke at four under, while pre-tournament favourite Martin Kaymer remains in contention at three under par.
West Lothian born Gallagher looks set to avoid the cut by posting a second round score of 71, but it could have been so much sweeter for the Scot.
Three birdies on the front nine put him to within touching distance of the top placed players but a poor back nine and five bogeys meant that Gallagher could only finish up at one over for the day.
Amongst the other Scots on show at Sandwich include former winner Paul Lawrie who sits at two over and Peter Whiteford who suffered a disastrous day after posting an impressive round of 70 on Thursday. After bogeying the 4th and 6th, Whiteford shot a double bogey at the 13th and is now placed under the projected cut with a score of five over.
Elsewhere, veteran Tom Watson rolled back the clock with a hole in one at the 6th – his 15th career ace. The 61-year old remains above the cut at two over.
